As the hemlines go up with the temperature, and snuggling up on the couch is replaced with rooftop BBQs and pool parties, the virtues of the balmy nights and long days spent outside brings with it many health risks. As a forensic cleaning company, Biohazard Trauma and Crime Scene Cleaning provides discreet and compassionate cleaning services to families and businesses that are faced with the unbearable task of cleaning up after an unattended death, sewage leak, or other biohazard clean up. While the countdown to the end of the year is on at most workplaces across the country, our technicians are on stand-by 24/7 over the Christmas and New Year period no matter how big or small the clean up may be.

Summer-Safety-Tips

Read on to see our 5 helpful hints designed to keep you and your loved ones safe during the Christmas holiday and Summer months this year.

Safety Away from Home

Summer holidays means less time at home and more time in the outdoors, likely in groups who are more than happy to let their hair down and explore. Summer camps have become a popular right of passage for many children in Australia and it might surpise ou to learn there is a huge number of different summer camp specialities including surf campsband camps, computer camps and even business camps for the budding economist or CEO.

As in any close quarters, this also means the risk of communicable diseases such as Stress good hygiene practices before children leave home, and instruct them not to share personal items like toothbrushes, water bottles, or towels with other campers.

Don’t Forget the Pets

Animals suffer from the heat, too. Remember to make sure they have adequate supplies of water and food when you are away, even if just for one afternoon. Fans don’t help animals as much as people because of their furs, so make sure your animal has an air conditioned place to retreat to. Avoid walking dogs on concrete during hot, sunny days – and never leave an animal in a car, even with the windows cracked open. For more ways to keep your furry buddies cool, check out the RSPCA Australia website.

Water Safety

There are many articles out there about how to keep children safe around water during the summer. And while we all know that drinking lots of fluids is key to surviving hot days, be sure to balance this with sports drinks or foods that contain sodium. Sodium helps the body retain water, and prevents the kidneys from overworking. Check out these tips for more information on water intoxication and safety and to ensure you have a safe and compliant pool fence.

Avoid a Summer Cold

If you’re planning time away from running water, anti-bacterial wipes and hand sanitizers can help keep icky germs at bay. Bring some along to the beach and on picnics, bike rides, and other outdoor activities. If you do get sick, don’t be tempted to keep going just because everyone else is out having fun. Treat a summer cold with the same seriousness as a winter infection, with extra rest and hydration.

Keep an Eye on the Elderly

Check on older relatives, and be sure they have the resources and ability to endure warmer temperatures. On hot and humid days, older people and those with chronic health problems should stay indoors in cool areas. Those without air conditioners relocate to cooler places like senior centres, shopping centres, and movie theatres. If you suspect someone is suffering from a heat-related illness, get him or her into a cooler, shadier or air-conditioned area. Encourage the person to shower, bathe or sponge off with cool water if it is safe to do so. Applying a cold, wet cloth to the wrists, neck, and armpits can also help.

The 5 Most Common Sources of Disasters in Your Home https://crimescenecleanups.com.au/blog/2015/10/16/the-5-most-common-sources-of-disasters-in-your-home Fri, 16 Oct 2015 02:29:14 +0000 http://crimescenecleanups.com.au/blog/?p=48 Whether water, fire or storms, disasters can strike your home […]

Whether water, fire or storms, disasters can strike your home when you least expect it. Natural disasters like flood water damage or storm damage are heartbreaking and can leave a wake of damage in their way. Damage from sources found closer to home such as burst pipes, sewage backflows and kitchen fires while more common, are no less damaging and sudden. Read on to learn about the 5 most common sources of disaster in your home and how to deal with and hopefully prevent them from occurring in your home.

Burst Water Pipes
When a water pipe busts, litres and litres can spurt out in just a minute and can cause serious structural damage if not remediated as soon as possible. If this happens, shut off the main water valve and call you plumber, insurance agent and experienced water damage remediation experts immediately.
Sewage Backflows
Sewage backflows can occur for a number of reasons including storms that cause river overflows. The most contaminated floodwater contains dangerous pathogens and sewage which can seriously harm anyone who comes into contact. This kind of water is referred to as black water. If you must walk through or near sewage backflows, always wear protective clothing. If is a matter of urgency that you call a professional restoration company to handle the clean up. To prevent sewage backflows, install backwater valves that stop the backflow on the sanitary sewer line during a flood or sewer blockage.
Washing Machine Overflows
Washing machine overflows account for a large portion of all water damage events in Australia. If your washing machine overflows, switch off the power supply and mop up the water as soon as possible to ensure your laundry walls and flooring does not develop further water damage. To prevent washing machine overflows, inspect the hoses regularly to ensure leaks, cracks, blisters and bulges have not occurred.
Kitchen Fires
Kitchen Fires can happen suddenly but can cause severe damage to your property. Common kitchen fires include grease fires, toaster fires, stovetop fires and over fires. When dealing with pan fires, never carry the pan outside as spilt oil can further damage your kitchen and cause burns. Use a fire extinguisher, or if safe, put a lit on the pan to extinguish the fire.
For toaster fires, unplug the cord if safe to do so and use a fire extinguisher to extinguish the fire.
If an over fire occurs, turn off the heat and leave the door closed to wait for the fire to self extinguish.
Carbon Monoxide Poisoning
Carbon Monoxide poisoning is one of the main causes of accidental poisoning deaths. Carbon Monoxide poison symptoms include headaches, dizziness, fatigue and vomiting. Install a carbon monoxide detector in your home to prevent CO poisoning and never ignore the alarm. Even if no one feels ill, CO poisoning can still occur as CO is an odourless, colourless and tasteless gas. The after hours GP helpline is an extension of the healthdirect nurse triage service providing you with free* medical advice and support if you have any concerns you or a family member may be suffering from Carbon Monoxide poisoning.

The 5 disasters mentioned are just some of the incidents that can cause damage in your home. As with any disaster, information and preparedness is key. Crime Scene Clean Ups is an Australia-wide restoration company providing prompt, reliable and discreet remediation services.

Meth Lab clean up statistics show the majority of properties used for the illegal manufacture of ice / Methamphetamine are rental properties with hundreds of landlords falling victim to clean up bills in the tens of thousands of dollars. With Queensland topping the list of Illegal Meth Lab discoveries by the drug squad, Brisbane and the Gold Coast are HOT destinations for Rental Property Meth Lab Cooking and ice seizures.

Tenants often wind up in Jail and many insurance companies do not cover the cost of a meth lab clean up in there policies.

How do you test your property for Meth?
The first step is to arrange for your property manager to perform a meth check using a Meth Test Kit. Meth testing kits can be purchased in Australia from Meth Lab Cleaners Australia and cost $199.00

These kits are designed to be used as indicators only. They should not be used to replace independent Lab testing.

The Home Meth Test Kit is used to wipe surfaces from multiple locations around the house like window ledges, above door frames, bathroom extraction vents, air-conditioning vents and benches. The swab is then placed into the solution and the vile cracked to check for a reaction. If the colour changes you might be in some serious trouble.

The next step is swab testing of individual rooms and areas. 1 swab per room per location, this could easily total 15-30 swabs. The swabs are then sent to a Accredited Science Laboratory for testing. Only then can we determine the right course of action for a clean up depending on which areas of the house are contaminated and how high the contamination level is.

If your house has been used to manufacture methamphetamine or ice please call 1300 246 429 and we can talk you through the process of cleaning and decontaminating a meth house.
